The recent letter from Dr. Alan Bradley confuses the debate over the Health and Human Services mandate that forces almost all employers, regardless of their moral and religious objections, to provide free contraceptive drugs, sterilization and abortion inducing drugs in their employee health plans. The issue the Catholic bishops and many other religious and secular leaders are concerned with is one of religious freedom as guaranteed by the first amendment. It is not an argument about the morality or the “societal benefits” of contraception. It is not an attempt to restrict doctors from prescribing, or the general public from using, those drugs and services. They are merely asking that the government not force religious institutions to provide drugs and services which violate their religious beliefs. They are only seeking continuation of the rights all religions have enjoyed for 200 yearsThe mandate is a gross intrusion into religion where the government has no right to intrude. It is clearly unconstitutional and must be rescinded. If allowed to stand it sets a dangerous precedent which will allow the government to infringe on any other liberties which we cherish.Bradley and all other thinking citizens should be alarmed about this overreaching by the Obama administration. Future mandates might force all doctors to perform abortions or euthanasia or to withhold needed medicine and treatments from those who are old, comatose, severely handicapped or otherwise not “useful.”Let your voice be heard. Call, write or email your congressman, senators and President Barack Obama about this issue while we still have a chance to protest without fear of reprisals.
