Relay for Life deserved coverage

OK, The Lima News, you did it again. Or should I say, “You didn’t do it” once again?

You missed an amazing newsworthy event on June 7 and 8 when you didn’t report anything about the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life held at the Lima Campus of OSU and Rhodes State College. This was an 18-hour event that included hundreds of cancer survivors and hundreds of people walking all through the night to raise money in the fight against cancer. We reached our goal of $103,000, of which 72 percent of that goes to help people locally.

I was sorely disappointed when I checked the paper on Saturday and found no photograph or report of our event. However, you had two big pictures and an article on the bull-riding event at the fairgrounds and three large pictures of the St. Gerard festival. I held out hope that maybe you would print something in the Sunday paper. Of course under the heading of “Area Festivals” on page B5, you printed a big picture of the Pork Rind festival and yet another big picture of the St. Gerard festival.

We would love to see The Lima News get on board and see why this event deserves news coverage. The American Cancer Society slogan is, “It’s about a community that takes up the fight!” Thanks to everyone who supported the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. Together we do make a difference in the fight against cancer.

The Lima community deserves a rose for raising $103,000 in the fight against cancer.

— Patsy Spring, Lima, Volunteer for the American Cancer Society
