Columnist missed two great players

I need to comment on Bob Seggersonís recent column (ďMy all-time Putnam County All-Star team,Ē C1, March 6). Particularly, Stretch Goedde, Class of 1942 Vaughnsville High School, as his All Time Selection.

Goedde was 6 foot 7 inches, extremely unusual for the year 1942. Goedde received a scholarship to Maryland University. He played only one year, then switched to the sport of baseball. He played for the Toledo Mud Hens, but never progressed any further. I saw Goedde once or twice. He was tall, but slow.

My main point of this letter is Seggerson failed to mention two great players from the 1950 Miller City State Champs, R. Ralph Meyer and Frank Schroeder. Meyer could play for any team.

By the way, Coach C. Norris Simpson received coaching help from Carl Bachman, Findlay High School, on defensing Dick Honigford. Honigford was 6 foot 7 inches from Delphos St. Johnís. Meyer and Schroeder double-teamed Honigford and held him far below his average. Honigford received a scholarship to Notre Dame, but never really played much.

Back in 1949, Delphos St. Johnís was state champs. St. Rose beat Delphos two out of four games. Once was in the tournament. Arenít sports wonderful? I was starting guard on the St. Rose 1949 team.
