Columnist right; Raise

the bar on education

Saturday’s column by Leonard Pitts is so right. You can’t fix education by lowering the bar.

It has long been known that children will live up to, or down to, your expectations for them. Thus we have young men and women who rise out of poverty, broken homes and want, use their brains to achieve academic success, and become our scientists, doctors, lawyers, star athletes and the next generation of hard working good parents. Conversely, when we suggest by our actions, words or lowered standards that we expect little from them, they fulfill that as well. Strong families (including single-parent families) who demonstrate love and affection every day, who have at least one meal together every day, and who ‘raise the bar’ for their children more often than not raise successful children.
