Be good stewards

of our resources

The April 26 editorial, “Immigration hypocrisy,” and many other articles, columns etc… call for compassion for immigrants. This is good, and I have appreciated opportunities to help too. Missing, however, is the also biblical call, in both Testaments, for stewardship, i.e. of this rare planet’s limited resources. We persistently ignore our increasing depletion and pollution of the clean water, air, farm land, minerals, living space, and so on, which our grandchildren, and those of the immigrants too, will require for their own comfort and livelihoods.

No way can we compassionately advocate for unlimited growth in our numbers, as we, in effect, continue to do. No letter can explore all the ways for us to make the future livable, but we certainly have to begin to acknowledge the problem and balance our appeals.
