Letter: President Trump faces a difficult dilemma

President Trump has a dilemma. He claims that he wants to testify under oath to Special Counsel Bob Mueller. The problem is, all of his advisors, including his lawyers, want him to avoid an interview with Mueller. Apparently they all fear the same thing, that the President will commit perjury.

Perjury only happens if you knowingly lie about a material fact related to the case. This may sound a little simplistic, but why is everyone be so concerned? If the President is completely innocent, as he has repeatedly claimed, all he has to do is tell the truth. Perjury only happens when you lie.

Of course, there is one other possibility that might be of greater concern. What if he actually has committed criminal offenses. In that case, telling the truth means that the President implicates himself in criminal wrongdoing. He could plead the 5th Amendment and avoid self-incrimination, but it would tarnish his image. In the past, President Trump has said that only guilty people plead the 5th. President Trump has a dilemma.
