The Lima News

So often, people in our part of the state feel forgotten and neglected by our state leaders.

Itís hard not to look at the money dished out for roads projects and other capital and wonder why a seemingly disproportionate amount of money seems to go to Ohioís Cincinnati, Cleveland and Columbus.

Today, the Lima region gets its chance to remind state leaders that we have a vibrant, hard-working group of people living here. Gov. John Kasich will deliver his State of the State speech from the Veterans Memorial Civic Center. Almost as importantly, nearly every cabinet-level leader is in Lima today, talking to the people affected by their decisions in Columbus.

Limaís voice will be heard today. And for that, The Lima News must use its bullhorn to commend Lima Mayor David Berger and state Rep. Matt Huffman, R-Lima.

Berger and Huffman spearheaded todayís efforts, using their knowledge of how Lima works to get the right people in the room at the same time to talk about a public-private partnership to make many of todayís special events happen.

Today easily could have been a repeat of last yearís State of the State, when Kasich delivered his speech in Steubenville. There wasnít anything inherently wrong about it, but at the end of the day it was just a speech in someplace other than the statehouse.

Lima wanted much more. In laying out the proverbial red carpet, we hope to show our state officeholders what works well here and what doesnít. This could yield benefits for years to come, as these officials have a better understanding of how their work affects a mid-sized Ohio city.
