The Lima News

Everybody is a good driver when it snows.

Yep.

If you donít believe that, just ask anybody who climbs behind the wheel of a vehicle, be it a four-cylinder rust bucket or a new pickup truck on steroids. Theyíll tell you how great of a driver they are; itís the other person who is a nut.

When 5 inches of snow gets dropped on area roadways like we saw earlier in the week, those nuts can do some of the nuttiest things (thatís why we call them nuts).

One of the first things that kicks in is their need to go out driving. People can be perfectly content in the comforts of their home, then put a little white powder on the roadways and suddenly they hear voices that tell them to run to the grocery store to pick up Cheerios.

Then there are the submarine drivers. They clear off a four-inch circle on their windshield, stick their eyeball up to it as if it were a periscope, and navigate their vehicles down the road. Always be cautious of the person who is driving the U-boat.

Finally, you have the important drivers. When traffic is down to one lane and everyone is driving cautiously, these are the folks who jump in the other lane and drive twice as fast as everyone else because they have somewhere important to go.

Why do people become such bad drivers when it snows?

Maybe itís not that they ďbecomeĒ bad drivers. Perhaps they actually are bad drivers; they just hide it better until the snow begs them to show their nutty side.

Weíre not talking about you, of course. Itís the other guy.
