Letter: Saints will be OK even with gay civil unions

Rochelle Dunlap, Bluffton

The war against civil unions has reached our little back corner of Conservativeville, and the first salvos in the battle have been fired.

It is a war that is going on across all parts of the United States. Apparently, it is a battle between the “sinners” and the “saints.” According to the saints, if two people, because they are the same sex, are afforded civil protection the entire country is going to hell. Marlene Wrasman, of Delphos, has stated that gays have brought down every civilization since ancient times. I have to admit, though, I did not realize that the Third Reich was a civilization instead of just a group of crazies who persecuted and killed people because of their religious beliefs. Oh, and they also included homosexuals in their genocide so perhaps she meant to suggest the Nazis were the saints' early warriors.

Weighing in on the sinners side is James Sendelbach, and of course Lima Mayor David Berger, who believe civil unions are no threat to the population at large. Sendelbach correctly states this “is a matter of law. ... not religious beliefs.” No one, including Berger, is suggesting churches be forced to allow the celebration of love between two people, regardless of their sex, within the halls of their sacred sanctuaries. A civil union allows a loved one to be in the room when someone is dying even if they are not blood-related. A civil union allows a loved one to get medical coverage if they are sick. A civil union allows two people who love each other to have that love recognized by the laws in the land of the free.
