Letter: Bath school building like a slide ruler
Recently I took a tour of Bath's elementary school building. From the outside it is a handsome building that proudly says “I educate your children.” Inside, however, the best adjective would be “quaint.” I would compare it to my slide rule. They both still work, and in their day, they made it possible for mankind to go to the moon. However, time and technology have left our old friend behind.
We have all seen the pictures of the heaved hallways and tilting floors, but did you know most classrooms have only two electrical outlets!
Technology wins that battle (or loses, depending on your point of view). The stage in the gym is now the teachers' workroom. However, will trip the circuit breaker if you use the laminator while someone is using outlets in the gym.
Mostly it's an old building.
It has reached its technological limits. Classrooms are too small. It takes two and one-half hours to serve lunch. Hallways and stairway landings are used for one-on-one tutoring, The building is not handicap accessible and the list goes on and on.
For $21 million dollars we can have a new old building. For $4 million more we could have a 21st Century facility that is safe inside and out that would better prepare our children for the rest of their education.
Take a tour, ask questions. Our children are worth it!
