Ten years ago the announcement of a gasification plant in Lima had everyone, myself included, excited at the prospect. There were big possibilities voiced about what this would mean for the community. We all liked hearing those. The reality has been that the city has bent over backward in an effort to prepare for something that shows no life whatsoever. The millions that we hear about are contingent upon on other nebulous things happening. What has the taxpayer, locally and nationwide, lost in this 10-year exercise in futility? How about this;• Money spent buying the South Main Street site and fencing it in.• Hiring of the head financial officer of Global Energy to be the mayor's chief of staff at $100,000 a year. This provided him a sinecure position to work at garnering financing for the energy plan while being paid by the city.• A nation swimming in debt to a nation that looks to be a huge future problem in the South Pacific is on the hook for millions of dollars for an underpass that, in its early stages, was touted as needed to allow traffic to use Vine Street when all of the expected coal trains were delivering coal to the plant. At the dedication of the underpass, Lima Energy was never mentioned as the reason for an underpass, instead it was a nearby school that decided its placement. Besides the city administration thinks Vine Street, rather than Bellefontaine Avenue, is the proper place for an underpass?
