STEVE STAYONOVICH, LimaIn light of the recent tragedy on Third Street and the resulting civil unrest that has stemmed from it, I am compelled to make the following comments:1. We live in a diversified community by choice. With that diversity comes differences, but if we are desirous of peace and harmony, we must make allowances for those differences, which we have accomplished (I believe) until now. Letís not let this one incident, while horribly tragic, destroy the fabric of our community.2. We have a police department to be proud of. Members of the Lima Police Department put their lives on the line every day to protect us. They are hardworking, moral men and women just like us. And yet, when in the performance of their jobs, something goes awry, we turn on them like a pack of wolves. We donít even have the facts yet, and those who are speaking out want this police officer brought to justice. This is reminiscent of days I thought were long gone. I donít believe for one minute that the officers went into that home with the intention of killing a mother and wounding her baby. The police were there trying to do the job that we, as a community, hired them to do. Itís very easy to pass judgment when weíre not the ones making split second decisions.3. In our lawsuit-happy society, I find it a miracle that anyone would want to be a law-enforcement officer. I certainly wouldnít want to take on the risks that go along with this job. We need to be supportive of our Police Department. If we canít do that, then we can apply for the numerous police officer positions that will surely open up in the near future.
