As an African-American, I do not appreciate Lima civil service board member Jacqueline Tyre including me in her “everyone says the N-word” category. This is not true. Neither my family nor my friends use that word in casual conversation.

Yes, some people choose to use the derogatory word in casual conversation, as Tyre did, and then justify it in some ridiculous fashion. But the word is not used by everyone in the African-American community.

The word is derogatory, obsolete and offense to some African-Americans. I challenge Tyre to go back and remember her black history, her struggle, before she tosses that word around as if she were saying “hello” to anyone, regardless of race, creed or color.
