Thanks to Dawn Kessinger’s column on Friday reminding women to continue their breast self-exams (“Self-exams: A sword to use against breast cancer”). I wish the best for her friend, Cindy, age 38, in her fight against breast cancer. I met my best friend, Mary, in 2002 when I cared for her during her treatment for breast cancer, and we have been helping raise money ever since.
As an oncology nurse and volunteer for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, I have met and cared for many women in their 20s and 30s with breast cancer. Thanks to donated funds, continued research, new technologies and better drugs, survival rates and cures are improving.
Please keep doing your self-exams and start your yearly mammograms at age 40 — despite the latest recommendations. Early detection is the key to success in the fight against breast cancer If you wish to get involved in the fight or need help or have questions, the American Cancer Society is there to help at www.cancer.org or 800-227-2345.
