James A. “Jim” Illig, 84, passed away July 9, 2013, at 8:54 a.m. at The Ohio State University Medical Center, Columbus.
He was born Oct. 31, 1928, in Ebensburg, PAa., to A.J. and Della Byrne Illig, who preceded him in death. On Oct. 24, 1953, he married the love of his life, Lucille Kahle, at St. Rose Catholic Church, Lima, and she survives in Landeck.
Jim worked at Sealtest and Pride of Lima before starting up I & K Distributors, Delphos, in 1966. He grew this business into a multi-state food processing and distribution company by the time he retired. He was active in the Landeck community in many ways. He started the Landeck Boy Scout Troop in 1963 and led the troop for several years. He co-chaired the Landeck Centennial Celebration in 1973. He loved fishing, hunting and playing Pinochle. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Landeck. He was an Army veteran who served during the Korean War from Jan. 4, 1951, to Dec. 11, 1952. He was a life member of American Legion Post 268, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3035 and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 471, all of Delphos, Knights of Columbus Council 2661, Lima, and just celebrated 50 year membership in the Catholic Knights of Ohio, now the Foresters. His most treasured memories were the Illig family gatherings around the kitchen table and his visits to “Freddies.”
Also surviving are six sons, Mark (Barbara) Illig, of Asheboro, N.C., Thomas (Anne) Illig of Macedonia, Donald (Chris) Illig, of Seville, Paul (Maria) Illig, of Lima, Steven (Donna) Illig, of Landeck, and David (Erika) Illig, of Delphos; three daughters, Doris Sadik, of Palatine, Ill., Mary Lou (Carl) Weber, of Ada, and Karen (Kevin) Buettner, of Ottoville; 30 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Illig, of California, and Leonard Illig, of Tiffin.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ronald Illig and Francis Illig; four sisters, Rita McCoy, Betty Switzler, Jean Welker and Nancy Lauer.
Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 14755 Landeck Road, Landeck. The Rev. Dave Reinhart will officiate. Burial will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Landeck.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Harter & Schier Funeral Home, 209 W. Third St., Delphos, where a parish wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
