DELPHOS — Esther L. “Shorty” Kirtland Patten, 95, died at 1:30 p.m. March 28, 2013, at St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima.
She was born July 26, 1917, in Bluffton to Edward and Teresa Bodisher Amstutz, who preceded her in death. In 1936, she married Crayton Kirtland, who died Jan. 2, 1952. In 1956, she married Virgil Patten, who died in 1978.
Mrs. Patten was raised in Bluffton by her uncle and aunt, Amiel and Sylvia Amstutz, along with cousins Dorthy Hursey and Melvina Lewis, who still reside in Bluffton. She graduated from Bluffton High School and attended her 75th high school reunion at age 93. She lived at Indian Lake for 30 years, where she was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose and the Fraternal Order of Eagles and was chaplain for the Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member of Rebekah Lodge, Bellefontaine, and also the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Roundhead. Her favorite hobbies were playing euchre, crocheting, and playing bingo while at Van Crest. She will be remembered for her love of giving hugs and kisses.
Survivors include a son, John (Margo) Kirtland, of Sparks, Nev.; a daughter-in-law, Virginia Kirtland, of Elida; a daughter, Carol Burkholder, of Raleigh, N.C.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Workman, of Florida.
She was preceded in death by a son, Charles Kirtland; a grandson, John Paul Stewart; three brothers, Lester, Mel and Harley; and four sisters, Naomi, Gladys, Evelyn, and Martha.
Services will begin at noon Wednesday at Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services, Shawnee Chapel. Pastor Gary Hohman will officiate. Burial will be in Benton Ridge.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the funeral home.
