LIMA

Samuel Lee Ross departed this life early on May 9, 2013, at 8:55 p.m. at his home in Queens Village, N.Y., with his wife Vonda and children by his side.

He was born on June 13, 1936, in Smiths Station, Ala., to Thelma Ross Wilson and the late Mercer Lee Ross. Years later, his family migrated to Ohio where he was educated in the public school system of the city of Lima. Upon graduation from Lima South High School, in 1955, he left Lima to enlist in the Air Force, where he was trained as an aircraft engineer. While stationed in New York, he reconnected with the woman who would become the love of his life and wife for over 50 years, Vonda Pinn. He was a proud man of strong character and was employed as a journeyman/electrician with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for over 40 years. He joined the Mount Olivet Baptist Church in the 1970s and served as a faithful member, serving on the Usher Board, co-chairman of the Deacon Board, member of the Trustee Board and teacher and superintendent of the Sunday school.

After a valiant battle with leukemia, Sam has departed this life for his heavenly home. Anyone who knows Sam would not be surprised he defied the odds and lived longer than expected with the disease. He is now safe in the arms of Jesus Christ.

Samuel leaves to cherish his memory, wife Vonda Josephine Ross; six children; seven grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; his mother, Thelma Ross Wilson, of Lima; two sisters, including Barbara Banks, of Lima; six brothers, including Gary Wilson, of Lima; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Laws, of Lima.
