AVON LAKE



Charles F. “Chuck” Hammer, 80, passed away March 26, 2013, at the Ames Family Hospice House, Westlake.



Chuck was born March 10, 1933, in Lafayette.



He graduated from Waynesfield High School, Waynesfield, in 1951, and then served in the Navy Air Wing during the Korean War. He continued his education at The Ohio State University, where he graduated in 1961 with a bachelor’s degree in education. He later earned a masters degree in education from Kent State University.



Chuck was a teacher for Avon Lake Schools for 24 years. He taught science, mechanical drawing and industrial arts as well as coached football and basketball at Learwood Junior High. During summers he worked and enjoyed being a starter at Sweetbriar Golf Course for 16 years. After retirement he worked at Our House in Westlake, a home for healthy elders.



He was an active member and loving steward at Lakeshore United Methodist Church and a member of American Legion Post 211, Avon Lake. Chuck loved nature and liked drawing and woodworking. His interests included family time, traveling and golf. He coached little league baseball for many years in the Avon Lake community.



Chuck is survived by his wife of 59 years, LaDene Shaw Hammer; and children, Mike (Deb) Hammer, of Carmel, Ind., Becky (Jerry) Keron, of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Jenni (Bryce) Jones, of Shakopee, Minn. Other survivors include grandchildren, Jeremy, Lindsey, Jackie, Mike, Jason, Brent and Tyler; and great-grandchildren, Jaiden, Carson, Campbell, Brady and Emory.



He was preceded in death by his sister, Donna Jean Judy; and parents Delbert N. and Marjorie J. Garber Hammer.



Friends may call at the Busch Funeral Home, 163 Avon-Belden Road, Avon Lake, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.



The Funeral service will be Saturday at Lakeshore United Methodist Church, 33119 Electric Blvd., Avon Lake, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Nancy Manner will officiate. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memory Garden.



Memorial contributions may be forwarded to Lakeshore United Methodist Church, 33119 Electric Blvd., Avon Lake; or Hospice of Western Reserve, 17876 St. Clair Ave., Cleveland.
