Lela V. Hartman Lawrence, 84, died at 6:55 p.m. May 14, 2013, at VanCrest Healthcare Center, Delphos.

She was born March 19, 1929, in Elida to John G. and Orpha E. Miller Hartman, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Lawrence was a member of Grace Baptist Church. She was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 370 Auxiliary and several bowling leagues. She retired as a registered nurse from Adams County Memorial Hospital. She had been a volunteer at St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima Manor Nursing Home, Delphos Area Visiting Nurses and WTGN. She was a very loving and giving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.

Survivors include a son, Dennis V. (Keva) Schmidt, of Augusta, Mich.; two daughters, Mary Bice, of Elida, and Elaine Lewis, of Lima; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Leonard Hartman, of Unity; and a sister, Joanne (Howard) Miller, of Archbold.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Merle Lawrence; a son, David Lee Schmidt; two sisters, Wilma Slagle and Irma Roney; and a son-in-law, Jack Bice.

Services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services, Shawnee Chapel. Pastor Matthew Oliver will officiate. Burial will be in Ash Grove Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Baptist Church, St. Rita’s Hospice or WTGN radio station.
