SPENCERVILLE — Don D. Whitmore, 77, of Spencerville, died at 4:57 p.m. May 11, 2013, at St. Rita's Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. He had been ill since August 2012.

He was born May 28, 1935, in Mercer County to Donald E. and Mabel I. Lillick Whitmore, who preceded him in death. On June 14, 1958, he married Carolyn I. Dull, who survives.

Mr. Whitmore was a 1953 graduate of Rockford High School and went on to serve four years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a graduate of the International Business College with a degree in accounting. He worked 19 years with Clark Equipment Co. in Lima as an accountant, then 21.5 years as an auditor for the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation. He attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Spencerville. He was a charter member of the Spencerville Rescue/Ambulance Service, serving 10 years; a 30-year member of the Spencerville Invincible Fire Co.; 40 years with the Spencerville Lions Club, serving in many capacities; and the Spencer Township Park Board for several years, where he mowed the park to perfection. He was also a member of American Legion Post 191 and the Northwest Ohio Field and Stream Association, both in Spencerville. He enjoyed traveling and watching his grandson's sporting events and his granddaughter playing volleyball.

Survivors also include a son, Douglas (Angie) Whitmore, of Wapakoneta; two daughters, Lori Byer, of Wapakoneta, and Kelly (Chad) Reynolds, of Spencerville; a sister, Ruth Gribler, of Van Wert; two stepsisters, Martha (Mel) Lawer, of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Linda Fisher, of Celina; three sisters-in-law, Helen Whitmore, of Convoy, Vi Whitmore, of Houston, Texas, and Marilyn Ahrens, of Ossian, Ind.; four brothers-in-law, Christie Bashore, of Rockford, Max Dull, of Willshire, Ned (Gloria) Dull, of Wren, and Jason (Rae) Dull, of Rockford; six grandchildren, Rachel (Chris) Bryan, Donnie (Morgan) Whitmore, Kaci (Dan) Schmerge, Tyler Levi, Lyndsi Whitmore, and Ellie Whitmore; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Verl and Paul Whitmore; and a sister, Juanita Bashore.

Services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home, Spencerville. The Rev. Jan Johnson and the Rev. Charles Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Ohio City, with military rites by Spencerville Veterans.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where the Invincible Firemen will conduct services at 7:45 p.m. and the Spencerville Lions will conduct services at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Instead of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Heart or Cancer societies or to Trinity United Methodist Church, Spencerville.
