TOLEDO — Dorothy A. Bowman died April 4, 2013, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg.

Dorothy was born June 19, 1918, to Roy and Mary Smith Hemphill, in Roundhead. She graduated from Wayne High School in 1935 and worked as the school librarian after graduation. She married Russell V. Bowman, June 19, 1938, in Waynesfield.

When, over the years, she was asked her employment history, Dorothy would stretch to her full 4 feet 10 inches and reply, “I raised four sons to be four fine men.” The steel in her voice made it clear that her family was her vocation. She took joy in watching her sons’ families flourish. Her eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren were a constant source of joy.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Russell Bowman; and her brothers, Eugene Hemphill and Bernard Hemphill.

She is survived by her sons, Thomas D. (Patricia) Bowman, of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, John H. (RuthAnn) Bowman, of Richmond, Va., James R. (Claudia) Bowman, of Dallas, and Theodore A. (Elizabeth) Bowman, of Maumee; her eight grandchildren, Donna (Robyn Froese) Bowman, of Regina, Saskatchewan, Nancy Bowman, of Seattle, Kathleen (Pal) Redly, of Geneva, Switzerland, Carol (James) Kennedy, of Toano, Va, Cmdr. Russell E. (Sarah) Bowman, of Old Lyme, Conn., David (Rebecca) Bowman, of Powhatan, Va., Capt. Julie Bowman, of San Antonio, and Frederick C. Bowman, of Columbus; and her great-grandchildren, Daniel and Anna Redly, Sadie and Cooper Bowman, Isabella Kennedy, and Connor, Richard (Mac), and Henry R. Bowman.

Dorothy and her family appreciated the care of her private caregivers, Ann, Bobbie and Janice, whose help made it possible for Dorothy to remain at home. Cathy and Natalie, Dorothy’s hospice home care team, was immeasurably helpful these last eight months.

There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be scheduled in the summer.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Toledo Lucas County Public Library, 325 Michigan Street, Toledo, OH 43604. Its community outreach program enriched Dorothy’s life through monthly book deliveries. Please also consider the Hospice of Northwest Ohio, 30000 East River Road, Perrysburg, OH 43551.
