LIMA — John C. Sherwin, 68, died at 3:04 p.m. July 13, 2013, at St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima.
He was born July 22, 1944, in Toledo to John K. and Dorothy Nowakowski Sherwin, who preceded her in death. On Feb. 27, 1976, he married Donna L. Maas Sherwin, who died Feb. 17, 2010.
Mr. Sherwin was a 1962 graduate of Libby High School, Toledo. After high school, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the USS Eldorado during the Vietnam War. He was a Bronze Star recipient. When finished serving his country, he took a position with Chrysler Corp. as an electrician. He worked there for years and then transferred to General Dynamics in Lima, also working as an electrician until he retired in 1996 after 15 years of service. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1275 and American Legion Post 96, where he served as commander in 2000. During Memorial Day, he would volunteer placing flags on the graves of veterans at local cemeteries. He had attended St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Lima. He enjoyed reading, gambling and traveling with his wife, especially out west to Las Vegas. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather.
Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Sherwin, of Columbus; a son, John D. (Beverly) Sherwin, of Powell; a brother, Mark Sherwin, of Vermillion; two sisters, Maureen (Robert) Garcia, of Toledo, and Victory (William) Kreinbihl, of Graytown; and two grandchildren, Lillian A. Fecke and Brayden A. Sherwin.
Services will begin at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. Military rites will be performed by the U.S. Navy and VFW Post 1275. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Toledo.
