LIMA — Jewel Grace Bakke Guffey, 70, passed away at 8:30 a.m. July 28, 2013, at her residence, surrounded by her family after a year long battle with leukemia. On Thursday, July 25, Jewel celebrated her 70th birthday with her family and friends.

She was born July 25, 1943, in Dickinson, N.D., the youngest of four children to Florence and Olaf Bakke, of New England, N.D., who preceded her in death.

Jewel is survived by her three children, daughter, Janelle Grubbs and her husband Donell Grubbs, grandchildren Eli and Sophia, of Columbus, Michael Guffey, wife Mi-Jeong and grandson Gil Lee, of Galveston, Texas, and Greg Guffey and special friend Kimberly Kohrn, of Lima; her oldest sister, Phyllis Elizabeth Bakke, of Cridersville; and her older brother, Marcus Bakke, of Bismarck, N.D.

Jewel was preceded in death by her sister, Alice Mae.

Jewel’s early education was in a one-room schoolhouse a mile away, and she attended high school in New England, N.D., graduating as valedictorian in 1961. She then began working as a dental assistant in Crosby, N.D., in a clinic managed by her brother-in-law, Ken Kvanvig. She helped care for her nephews, Tim, Jon and Paul after her sister Alice’s death, until she went to Springfield, Mo., to attend Central Bible College. There she met and married David Guffey and from this union were born her three children.

Jewel was a talented musician who played piano and organ at Bible camps, weddings and funerals, locally at Chiles-Laman Funeral Home. She was a devout Christian and faithful member of the First Assembly of God, where she served as the church organist for decades. A very enterprising worker, Jewel distributed Avon products and was a prize-winning Creative Memories representative. She delivered newspapers for The Lima News for many years and was a postmaster relief at various post offices in the region. Her courage, optimism and determination, while battling leukemia in the last year of her life, were an inspiration to all who knew her.

Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Shawnee Community United Methodist Church. The Rev. Randy Davis and the Rev. Jerry Hall will officiate. Burial will be in Shawnee Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services, Shawnee Chapel, and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Assembly of God benevolent fund, P.O. Box 1464, Lima, OH, 45802.
