Mary J. German

Mary J. German, 84, passed away the afternoon of June 12, 2013, at Kindred Hospital, Lima, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Jan. 6, 1929, in Delphos, to the late Otto and Rose Stauterman Heitz. She married Virgil German on Sept. 8, 1951. She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Ann (Jim) Benfield and Sue Smith, both of Delphos; a son, Thomas (Ginny) German, of Elida; six grandchildren, Ken (Kristine) Keirns, of Tampa, Fla., Chad A. (Kendra) German, of Graytown, Chris (Kristina) Smith, of Venedocia, Julie (Jim Wagner) Smith, of Delphos, Jane (Andy Lisk) Keirns, of Delphos, and Jeff Smith, of Delphos; four stepgrandchildren, Cynthia (Jay) Newcomb, of Riverview, Mich., Renee (Rory) Tarp, of Waterford, Mich., Robert (Christie) Kemper, of Kettering, and Michelle (Greg) Stiffey, of Elida; eight great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; two sisters, Joan (George) Ross, of Cincinnati, and Elizabeth Grace, of Coldwater, Mich.; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Heitz, of Wapakoneta; a brother-in-law, Donald Dobner, of Delphos; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Catherine Heitz; and four brothers, Robert, Frank, Father Louis and Ralph Heitz; a sister-in-law, Betty Dobner; brother-in-law, Oris Grace; a stepgreat-grandchild, Brent Benfield; and nephew, Neal Dobner.

Mary was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She graduated from St. Johnís High School and attended Bowling Green State University. She worked at Greggís Department Store, Lima, and was a clubhouse manager at Sandy Point Lake, Gomer. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Delphos, and the Catholic Daughters of America. She volunteered for many years at the St. Johnís Momís Room and the parish festival. She was an excellent cook, avid gardener and a seamstress. She enjoyed her time with her grandkids and great-grandkids.

Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Delphos. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Delphos.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Strayer Funeral Home, 1840 E. Fifth St., Delphos, where a CD of A service will be held at 7 p.m. and a parish wake service at 7:30 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Johnís School.
