Michael “Mick” Gabes
Michael “Mick” Gabes, 64, died at 8:25 p.m. Feb. 6, 2013, at Kindred Hospital, Lima.
He was born Feb. 25, 1948, in Lima, to Donald and Connie Cook Gabes. On July 10, 1993, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Celina, he married Wendy S. Schisler, who survives.
Survivors also include a son, Shaun (Amity) Gabes, of St. Marys; a daughter, Grace Gabes, of St. Marys; three grandchildren, Myah Gabes, Caleb Gabes and Braylon Gabes; his mother, Connie Gabes, of Lima; a sister, Lori (Jeff) Geesman, of Lima; a brother, Steve (Sherleen) Gabes. of Lima; and his mother-in-law, Janet Schisler, of Mount Vernon.
He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Gabes; and his father-in-law, Larry Schisler.
He was a 1965 graduate of Lima Senior High School, received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Bluffton College and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Bowling Green State University. He was an Army veteran serving his country during the Vietnam War.
He served as a teacher at Lima Senior High School, Lima South Junior High and in Steubenville and Buckeye North School districts. He retired from Celina Senior High School. While at Celina, he taught applied physiology and science courses. He was very proud to have coached football and swimming for the Bulldogs.
He was a member of South Side Christian Church, Lima. His favorite pastimes included fishing near his home on Grand Lake St. Marys, following college football, spending time at Put-in-Bay on Lake Erie and listening to the music of Jimmy Buffett.
Services are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Monday at South Side Christian Church, 3300 South Side Drive, Lima. The Rev. Wanda Werking will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Lima, with military rites.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Miller Funeral Home, 1605 Celina Road (Ohio 70 West Chapel), St. Marys. Additional visitation will be held after 9:00 a.m. Monday at the church in Lima.
Memorial contributions may be directed to a scholarship fund to be established in memory of Mr. Gabes.
