Carl Ludwig Serr, 84, died peacefully at 7:44 p.m. Aug. 8, 2012, at his residence surrounded by his family.
He was born June 25, 1928, in Auglaize County to Otto and Sophia Metz Serr, who preceded him in death. On June 29, 1952, he married Phyllis Finley, who survives. They were married for 60 years.
Mr. Serr attended Botkins School, Botkins, until his junior year and graduated in 1946 from Jackson Center High School, Jackson Center. He was a Navy veteran serving from 1947 to 1951, during the Korean War. He retired in 1994, as a letter carrier and window clerk from the United States Postal Service, after 26 years. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Botkins, where he was baptized and confirmed. He was a member of Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 3316, Jackson Center, and the American Legion Post 446, Anna. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was an avid antique collector and loved to attend auctions.
Survivors also include three children, Karen (Richard) Hatfield, of Wapakoneta, Connie (Wayne) Schneider, of Botkins, and Carl (Mindy) Serr, of Wapakoneta; six grandchildren, Chris and Allison Hatfield, Ryan (Kara) Schneider, Shawn (Andrea) Schneider, Jackson and Leah Serr; three great-grandchildren, Makenzie, Lydia and Kelsey Schneider; and his youngest brother, Ernest (Beverly) Serr, of Texas.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Nathaniel Scott Hatfield; a daughter-in-law, Megan (Peachey) Serr; and six siblings, Leona (Gilbert) Schumann and Hulda, Margaret, Herman (Katharine), Willis (Ruth) and Edison (Rosemary) Serr.
Services will begin at 11:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Botkins. Pastor Bob Carter will officiate. Burial will be in Loramie Valley Cemetery, Botkins, with military rites.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home, Wapakoneta, and one hour prior to services Monday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church or to the Carl and Phyllis Serr Family Scholarship at Botkins Local School.
