Miller City

MARGARET E. "MARGE" LEIS, 97, died at 11:40 a.m., Feb. 5, 2007, at Leipsic Retirement Village, Leipsic.

She was born April 3, 1909, in Miller City to Christian and Helen Noirot Kern, who preceded her in death. On April 23, 1935, she married Oliver "Bud" Leis, who died Jan. 23, 1992.

Mrs. Leis was a teacher for 41 years. She taught at St. Patrick's, Shelby County, for four years, and at Miller City-New Cleveland schools for 37 years. She was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Miller City. She was a member of Putnam County Retired Teacher Association and a life member of the Ohio Retired teachers and National Retired Teachers associations. She was a member of the Smithsonian Institute. Following her graduation from Putnam County Normal School, she began teaching in a one-room schoolhouse. She received a bachelor's degree in elementary education in 1961 and a master's degree in education in 1965 from Bowling Green State University.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Christian Jr., George and infant Neil Kern; and five sisters, Helen Hamm, Victoria Deitrick, Lenora Deitrick, Lucille Limbaugh and infant Emma Kern.

Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Miller City. Father Robert DeSloover will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Love Funeral Home, Ottawa, where a Scripture service will be held at 3:30 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Masses or St. Nicholas Catholic Church.
