Residents from The Ridge “Bike to the Bay”

LIMA - Members of the rehab therapy group at The Ridge at Shawnee celebrated Saturday at Grand Lake St. Marys after recently completing their "Bike to the Bay" challenge.

On March 1, administrator Kelly Wilhelm presented the group with a contest. Every 15 minutes they spent doing physical therapy exercises, such as upper and lower body arm bikes, would equal one mile, Wilhelm said. Their goal was to "bike" all the way to Grand Lake St. Marys, roughly 60 miles down the road. The members who accomplished the 60-mile goal would be rewarded with a trip to the lake and a cruise.

"We had their names up on the board with their individual progress, as well as total team progress," Wilhelm said. "They all got to the 60-mile goal very quickly. We had to have them start to ‘bike back' from the lake."

Clymer's Medical Transport donated the transportation for the 35 residents and their family members who were in attendance.

Court of Honor held for area Eagle Scout

LIMA - On June 1, an Eagle Scout Court of Honor was held for John Segovia, the son of Bruce and Tammy Segovia of Elida, Ohio. The ceremony took place at Johnny Appleseed Metro Park.

"Our scoutmaster spoke and mentioned all of the troop members," John Segovia said. "After we got our Eagle packets, we presented our mentors and parents with their pins."

Segovia's Eagle Scout project involved landscaping the back entrance of the Westside United Methodist Church, in Lima. Segovia was joined by his father and scoutmaster, Bruce Segovia, the assistant scoutmaster, Steve Grimm, and his fellow members of Boy Scout Troop 243.

Segovia is a 2008 Elida High graduate and plans to attend Ohio State University.

Van Wert Woman's Club names Thomas Woman of the Year

VAN WERT - Mary Ellen Thomas was chosen unanimously to represent the Van Wert Woman's Club as the 2008-2009 Woman of the Year. During her 41-year membership in the club, Thomas has served as president during the 1974-1976 term and again for a partial term in 1991.

Though Thomas has wintered in Arizona for the past few years, she has now returned to Van Wert and continues as an active club member. She has served in all of the departments and committees, and has shown a willingness to serve in many capacities throughout the years.

The club has been a strong interest in her life, Thomas said, as it has brought her varied experiences and opportunities to develop friendships with other members. One of Thomas' favorite memories of her club involvement was when she served as the hostess at the front desk, greeting members as they arrived.

The decision to elect Thomas as the 2008-2009 Woman of the Year was in recognition of her continuous active participation.
