Man injured in Van Wert fireworks mishap

Published July 8, 2009

VAN WERT -- A Dayton man was injured while releasing fireworks Saturday during Van Wert's public fireworks exhibition.

Shane Cartmill, public information officer at the Ohio Division of State Fire Marshal, said a 6-inch shell detonated inside the mortar tube and then exploded outwards. Paul Anzik suffered bruises from the debris but no lacerations.

Van Wert Fire Chief Jim Steele said Anzik was treated at Van Wert County Hospital and released later that evening.

"It was probably a shell failure and was no fault of the shooter," Steele said.
