Belle Center man killed in crash near Waynesfield

WAYNESFIELD — State troopers were continuing to investigate on Thursday a two-car crash late Wednesday that killed a Logan County man near Waynesfield.

Sgt. Brian Jordan, of the Wapakoneta post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, said no charges or citations had been filed as of Thursday afternoon. Troopers were called shortly before 10:30 p.m. Wednesday to state Route 117 and Fairmount Road, northeast of Waynesfield.

“It appears that one of the drivers attempted to make a left turn onto Fairmount Road and struck the other vehicle head-on,” Jordan said. “We have no idea why the individual attempted to make the turn.”

Jordan said a 1998 Acura 3.0 CL driven by Brandon R. Fetter, 21, of Waynesfield, was traveling northwest on state Route 117 when Fetter attempted the turn. Fetter's car struck a 2003 Hyundai Accent driven by Michael E. Ford, 26, of Belle Center that was traveling in the opposite direction.

Fetter's vehicle slid off the road into a ditch, while Ford's vehicle came to rest in the roadway, Jordan said. Both vehicles sustained severe, disabling damage, he said.

Ford was pronounced dead at the scene by Auglaize County Coroner Thomas Freytag, Jordan said. Fetter was taken to Lima Memorial Health System, where he was listed in stable condition, Jordan said.

Troopers said Ford was not wearing a properly adjusted seat belt at the time of the crash. Jordan said troopers were investigating the possibility that alcohol may have contributed to the crash.

“We're going to need the results of the alcohol tests to see what charges there will be, if any,” Jordan said.
