Sentencing delayed for former player

DETROIT

The sentencing of a former Lima Senior and University of Toledo basketball player charged in a point-shaving scheme has been postponed until June.

Sammy Villegas was scheduled to be sentenced Thursday in federal court in Detroit for his role in the scheme. Sentencing has been rescheduled for June 26.

Villegas is expected to get at least 2.5 years in prison on one count of conspiracy to influence sports contest by bribery. He was one of six former UT basketball or football players charged. Two Detroit businessmen also were charged.

Villegas reached a deal to help prosecutors, including to testify against co-defendants. The scheme happened between 2004 and 2006. Villegas altered his game, for example, by missing shots, to make sure bets on the game matched the point spread. He was paid between $300 and $400 when the gambler won a wager.
