1. You help run the weekly adult skate session at Edgewood Skate Arena. What do you enjoy about it?It's excellent exercise. Everyone's very nice; we're kind of like one big family.2. How long have you been skating?Since I was 2. Shortly after I learned how to walk, my parents bought me roller skates and took me roller-skating. When I was 8, we went to Van Wert and took skate dance lessons. Probably in 1957, we started going to the Dixie [the Dixie Highway roller skating rink] here in Lima. When my husband and I got married, that took care of skating for a while. When our children got bigger, we took them roller-skating also. We had to go to Napoleon at the time; there weren't many skating rinks then and there really aren't now.3. When did you start at Edgewood? In 1983, we started coming here and we've been coming here ever since, pretty much every Wednesday.4. You and your husband competed nationally. Tell me about that.I started taking lessons from a skating coach who was here, Bob Franz, who has since passed. I decided that maybe we could skate competition. My husband, who had never taken dance lessons, learned the dances. In March of 1991, we started taking lessons together and in August, we skated our first competition and took first place. In 1992, we took first place in Ohio and we took first place in the region and third place nationally, held in Fresno, Calif.5. So, that was it: You just rode off into the sunset?Kind of. It's a lot of work, and a lot of travel time. But we really just enjoy this on Wednesday mornings.6. You pick the music from the DJ booth. How do you select the music?I see who's here, who likes what. You just have a feel for it.7. It seems like the group members are very good friends. What do you do on Wednesdays? We say hello, and play different types of music. We share quilts, do some skating, take a break with free coffee. Some of us take our roller skates off and line dance.
