For those who don’t know, what is The Athletic Club all about?

The Athletic Club is a 24-hour fitness gym. Our members will have complete access to the entire facility through a key fob. We will be offering quite a few services in addition to the fitness center. We’ll have personal training, a licensed massage therapist, a certified yoga therapy teacher. Along with that we’re going to have quite a few fitness classes — aerobics, strength-training, pilates and so forth. Those will be an extra cost. We have plenty of membership options — three-month, a one-year and a one-year family. You do have to be 18 and older to join the facility.

The Athletic Club is hosting a grand opening this week and celebrating the move from the old location on Commerce Drive. Why move?

At our old location it was way out in the boonies. No one knew about us and we didn’t really promote it either. We were part of another business and we just expanded. When he had to move out we were looking for a better location where there was a lot of traffic and just being part of the downtown here. We think it’s going to be very beneficial. A lot of people can stop down on their lunch breaks and get a workout in, take a fitness class and just add it into their daily routines.

Are there any new programs you’re looking to add now that you have the new location?

We’ve always had the fitness classes and the personal training. We’re going to offer a licensed massage therapist. She’s also certified in reflexology. I have an instructor coming from Lima and she’s going to be doing the yoga therapy one-on-one. We’re just going to keep adding new services. We’re just looking for new things to bring in. We’re working on that.

In addition to managing the club, you’re also a certified personal trainer. Have you always envisioned yourself doing this for a living?

Yeah. My degree’s actually in business. When I was in college I worked at an all women’s fitness center. I started from the bottom and worked my way up to manager there, had my business degree. What really got me into getting my certification was you’re not really trained to go in depth with each person. You just usually put them on the same program as you put everyone else on. I wanted to go more in depth with that. That’s why I got my certification through ACE.

What goals do you have for The Athletic Club?

I’d definitely like to pick up more clients. I’d just like to let people know we are downtown, of course, pick up more members through that. I would really like to add more services.

You’re a native of Wapakoneta. Did you see yourself managing a business here when you went off to college?

Honestly, no. I thought once I’d leave Wapakoneta I’d be gone. I have so many family roots back here. I just enjoy being a part of the small town atmosphere. I lived in Findlay for seven, eight years. It was nice. I just really like being back home. I like the smaller town. It’s exciting to get it started. It’s something I wanted to do I just didn’t know where or how to do it. It just kind of fell into place. Working out well so far.

NOW OPEN

The Athletic Club recently relocated to a new location on the second floor of the Chase building downtown, 16 E. Auglaize St. The 24-hour fitness center will be hosting a grand opening celebration through Oct. 10 from noon to 7 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
