An interview with Mary Buckley. HER ROLE: She and her husband enjoy dressing in unique Halloween costumes.

1. Have you always been into Halloween?

I guess I dressed up as a kid but I wasnít crazy about Halloween. There is something about it as an adult though. Thereís something attractive about dressing up as crazy people.

2. How did you and your husband start coming up with these ideas?

We always go to this party of my college roommateís, Dana Dickson. She lives up near Dayton. Itís a family party. Her mom and her in-laws come; people bring their kids. There are contests, food ó itís lots of fun. The first year, we dressed up but not as a couple. Then we started thinking of couples we could dress up as. The first year we dressed as a couple, we did the Roaring '20s.

3. How long have you been doing this?

This is the 13th annual party. We havenít made it every year ó I canít remember how many we missed though.

4. Where do you get your costumes from?

Some of the pieces we have, but most of the things we rent from Once Upon a Fantasy in Elida. Barb and Jean [owners] always fix us up.

5. Where do you get your ideas?

We want to dress up as a couple, and we try to do something that is timely and current. Four years ago, we went as Sarah Palin and her husband.

6. Is your husband a willing participant in this ó has he ever said no to a costume?

My husband will do anything.

7. Do you have any favorite couples youíve dressed up as?

The costume we are remembered for the most ó the one that all other costumes are judged by ó is when we went as Sonny and Cher. At first I thought I could get all glamorous, but my husband said that he had to be Cher because he was taller. We dressed him up in this slinky, sparkly gown and 4-inch platform heels. Nobody even remembers what I wore. I think my friends were surprised because they thought Matt was more conservative than that. We also went as Axl Rose and Slash [Saul Hudson] from Guns Ní Roses. Matt was Axl and he wore a tattoo sleeve, a studded bracelet and a strawberry blond wig. He found his original stonewashed jeans from 1987. He was quite pleased that he still fit in them. He also had on an original pair of Air Jordans from the '80s. As Slash, the wig and top hat were key for me. Barb found me a lovely curly black wig and a top hat, and I got a necklace with silver medallions that I took apart and hot glued to a cardboard band that I wrapped around the hat.

8. What are you going as this year?

We just decided today after going through the process of trying on several costumes. Weíre going to be Batman and Catwoman.

9. Whatís the craziest thing thatís happened to you in your costumes?

We were driving home dressed up as Axl and Slash ó we still had our wigs on ó and it was very late. We had stayed visiting and it was about 4 in the morning, and a policeman in Shawnee pulled us over because the reflectivity of our license was off. I guess he couldnít read it properly. Anyway, the police officer looked very young, and he was amused by our costumes. He asked us what we were dressed as, and when we told him, we realized he was too young to know who Guns Ní Roses were. So we were trying to explain who they were, naming their songs ó I think we even sung one to him. He didnít end up giving us a ticket.
