It is here now.
High school and college begin this week and the NFL kicks off beginning next Thursday.
Now, I love it.
Throughout the summer, people are asking me if I am ready for the Browns, or the Buckeyes, or high school football to begin and I always have the same response.
“Not yet, because once it gets here, it is non-stop for me until the boys’ state basketball tournament in Columbus at the end of March.”
That means nothing to true football fans, who gear up for every Friday night, Saturday afternoon or evening, or Sunday afternoon to watch their favorite teams, whether in person, or go to the games, this time of year.
It’s a whole different ballgame once football season ends.
For me, the focus after football continues with high school hoops, and college, and the NBA, but there is far less interest overall compared to football fanatics.
And remember, football is only once a week for your favorite team, while the hoopsters play several times each week.
I hosted the Rotary Club high school football coaches’ luncheon Monday.
Monday night, I began Sportstalk with Koza talking Buckeyes with the former Ohio State football standout Dave Cheney.
Tuesday night, I participated in my first of what will be at least three fantasy football drafts.
My first FAN game of the week broadcast is Friday night in Delphos.
Okay, I AM ready for some football.
I do looooovvvvvveeeee it!
OTHER KOZA THOUGHTS:
• I am not jumping on the Buckeyes bandwagon like everyone else seems to be-despite the loss of one of the best athletes in college football in quarterback Braxton Miller. Let me be frank! You have an unknown quantity at QB, who has never taken a snap under center that counts-plus without your stud running back in Carlos Hyde, and most of their offensive line from last year, and two of their best defensive players from one of the worst defenses that we have seen from previous OSU teams? Can you say NFL players now!
Am I making any sense here? Serious question marks for sure with this year’s club, but I guess its, “In Urban We Trust” now?
• The Josh Gordon one year suspension officially announced by the NFL on Wednesday is a toughie. But watching the Browns this preseason, there are a lot more problems than just receiver, for sure. Still, it must be noted that the Browns, knowing about Gordon’s upcoming, and now confirmed status, refused to address the receiver need in the May draft or never made any serious bid for help at that position since? You get what you deserve! Ugh!
• Finished up our 30-in-30 last week-Sportstalk with Koza’s top 30 Limaland football players over the past 30 years. In case you missed it, our number one was former St. Henry and Penn State and NFL standout Jeff Hartings. He was an all- state offensive and defensive performer as a Redskin, a two time All-American with the Nittany Lions, a first round NFL draft pick of the Detroit Lions and a two time pro bowler with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Overall, an 11 year NFL career that included winning a Super Bowl, too. Jeff now does inner city mission work in Pittsburgh and coaches high school football as well. He’s a number one on and off the gridiron.
