AKRON — Riley Iiames of Lima led the local contingent competing in the 77th All-American Soap Box Derby on Saturday with a seventh-place finish in the Local Stock Division.
Iiames went through five heats in order to finish in the top nine.
The derby featured competitors from the United States and other countries competing for a share of $28,500 in scholarships.
Elida student Sarah Cole (Local Super Stock Division) and Perry’s Dallas Maxwell (Local Masters Division) were eliminated in their first heats.
Mason Breeden of Culpeper, Virginia, won the Local Stock championship. Emerson Minch of Cleveland won the Local Super Stock Division, and Campbell Conrad of Arlington, Massachusetts, took first place in the Local Masters Division.
Dylan Theisen of Tallmadge won the Rally Stock Division, and Sabrina Engleman of Troutville, Virginia, took first-place in the Rally Super Stock Division. Daniel Raulli of East Syracuse, New York, was named winner in the Rally Masters Division.
This year, 495 racers competed in the downhill competition of gravity-powered cars.
