LIMA — Most racers at Limaland Motorsports Park are looking to beat the other racers in order to move up in the standings. For Kevin and Nick Roberts, they are also looking to beat each other for bragging rights.

Nick Roberts, the younger of the two, won the Rookie of the Year for the sprints in 2013 at Limaland.

“I think I started racing when I was about 7,” Nick Roberts said. “It started with drag racing and then got into this (sprints) within the last few years.”

He has enjoyed the experience in the short year or so that he’s been competing at Limaland.

“Last year was my first year here, and I got into this out of the mini-sprints,” Nick Roberts said. “Coming here every week is something that I look forward to.”

Kevin Roberts attributes racing to be somewhat of a family tradition.

“We have one older brother and our father got us into drag racing,” Kevin Roberts said. “It started out with junior dragsters, and we’ve been going to the race track ever since we were in diapers.”

Even though drag racing was something that they always enjoyed doing, they wanted to try something new.

“We kind of got tired of the drag racing,” Kevin Roberts said. “We moved onto the mini-sprints. Once we got started on those, we kind of moved on from that. We were fortunate enough to win several features the last couple of years and really got rolling with it. Then we decided to move up to the full size sprints.”

Nick Roberts likes to use his brother for advice and pick up on things that he does. Kevin does the same thing with Nick.

“We work back and forth with each other and try to learn different things from each other,” Nick Roberts said. “The best part about being out here is being able to race this car. If it wasn’t for the car lot, we wouldn’t be here doing this.”

The brothers are also fortunate enough to work with each other at the same place during the week.

“We own a Buy Here Pay Here in Washington Court House, Ohio,” Kevin Roberts said. “I run the daily show on that. Nick works for us, and we all work together.”

Even though the two brothers care about each other and work together, they are still competitors who want to win.

“Probably the most fun thing to do is come out here and just beat him,” Kevin Roberts said with a laugh. “You always try to do well but it gives you bragging rights when you leave if you can win a race over your brother.”

Winning Rookie of the Year is a significant accomplishment in anybody’s career, but Nick Roberts wants to do even more than that as his career continues to develop.

“I want to do better in points this year than what we did last year,” Nick Roberts said. “We’ve had motor issues already. We just have to get that out of the way and see where we can end up in the points.”

Kevin Roberts has similar goals in mind.

“My goals are to just win some heat races; I know they don’t matter much as far as the night goes,” Kevin Roberts said. “It does help out with your starting spot. A good starting spot always helps you out. This is the first year that I’ve won a heat race in this car. It is the small feats like that and overcoming those. Maybe we can pull off a feature win by the end of the year. I think we’re on the right track. Just have to go inch by inch to get there.”
