Parade big hit at Spencerville Summerfest
Comments 0 | Recommend 0SPENCERVILLE - Every year, Gary Gaberdiel comes home from Cleveland to sit on his parents' 4th Street porch during Spencerville Summerfest.
It's the perfect way for him to see old friends, especially during the Saturday night parade that rolls right in front of the family home.
"I grew up here and I know most all these people, so I always come back," he said from his porch filled with family and friends. "I've seen quite a few people today."
Spencerville Summerfest continues today, with the duck race fundraiser starting at 3 p.m.
Everyone agrees the highlight of the weekend event is Saturday's parade, followed by the fireworks. People started arriving with lawn chairs and lining 4th Street long before the parade kicked off.
Cheryl Hover, a 58-year resident of Spencerville, doesn't ever miss the festival and parade, in its 13th year. She often has someone in her family who is participating.
"It is a big deal," she said. "It draws the community together. It's a fun time. The organizations work very hard to put this on for the community."
Hover came Saturday with about 15 family members and friends, including her 9-year-old grandson, Nathan Good.
"I'm looking forward to seeing the police cars and the fire engines," he said. "I'm also looking forward to them sending out souvenirs."
The police cars kicked off the parade, and there were plenty of fire trucks blasting their sirens to the delight of the younger parade-goers. The Spencerville High School marching band, veteran groups, old cars, dance and baton groups and local public officials were among those people gathered along the parade route saw.
Most exciting for 6-year-old Mason Simindinger was anyone who had candy.
"I have my bag right here," he said, ready to load up, and looking anxiously up the road for the fire trucks, his next favorite thing at the parade.
Mason's dad, Scott Simindinger, brings his family from Sidney each year for Summerfest. He remembers similar activities from his childhood.
"I love this town," he said. "I was born and raised here. Anything that the town has that brings pride to the town, I like to come."
