Hot, dry summer speeds Ohio sweet corn season
PANDORA (AP) — Consistently hot weather this summer has meant an earlier end than usual to the sweet corn season across Ohio.
Jerry Suter, owner of Suter’s Produce in Pandora, said he closed up his stands and ended the sweet corn season on Wednesday. That’s about eight to 10 days ahead of schedule, he said.
“We thought we would be picking now. The hot weather sped them up,” Suter said. “That’s it. There’s no more.”
Suter said the early end wasn’t a major problem. The farm tends to taper down toward the end of the season anyway with high school and college seasonal workers heading back to school, he said.
The Ohio Farm Bureau Federation says hot and relatively dry growing conditions caused corn to ripen quickly.
Lisa Schacht’s family owns Schacht Farm Market in central Ohio’s Canal Winchester. She says the speeded-up season means growers who normally offer sweet corn through September may leave some consumers disappointed this year.
Farm Bureau Federation spokesman Joe Cornely says prices for sweet corn should not rise much, despite the abbreviated supplies. He says prices are set at the beginning of the season.
