Lima council to vote on salt contract

LIMA — A city's salt pile is as good an indicator as any when classifying the winter weather.

In Lima, we're about out, and as drivers know, that's not a good thing.

The administration on Monday will ask City Council to approve a contract with the Cargill Corp. for more road salt. The city needs a new contract because it has used the allotment it can purchase through the state, Deputy Public Works Director Saul Allen said.

“Even with the state contract, we're allowed to go 20 percent over our estimate, but we've also gone through that amount,” Allen said. “Hopefully, with this we can get through this month and the next.”

Until this past week, the city had not experienced large storms, but other weather added up, Allen said.

“We've had a lot of little storms with icing, and we've continuously used salt,” Allen said.

The new salt will cost more than that purchased through the state's Department of Administrative Services, which offers a lower rate because of bulk ordering.

In other business, council will:

• Vote on separate contracts with Spherion Inc., Custom Staffing, Stolly Insurance Group, United Fire Apparatus, Tork Products, West Central Ohio Regional Healthcare Alliance, and Clemans, Nelson & Associates.

• Hear from Utilities Director Gary Sheely regarding operations at the compost facility.
