Jim Reber who led St. Rita's for 20-plus years, announced his retirement plans.

Reber to retire from St. Rita's in May

LIMA — The man who led St. Rita's from hospital to health system will retire in May.

Jim Reber served as CEO of St. Rita's Medical Center for more than 20 years. In 2010, he became the first CEO of a new umbrella organization called St. Rita's Health Partners, set up to cover a multitude of off-campus services and partnerships included in St. Rita's operation.

Reber, 64, will become a consultant to St. Rita's parent company Catholic Health Partners and work part-time with the 16-hospital chain, he said Friday.

Earlier this week, St. Rita's Vice President Walt Kinsey mentioned the timeline for Reber's retirement and next plans during his introduction of Reber at a speech to Lima Rotary Club.

Reber led St. Rita's through tremendous change and growth. The health center saw physical expansions in 1989, 1995, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2004 and 2007 and this year. That work included new medical offices, a cancer center, health center, parking garage and the $130 million patient tower.

“I've been privileged to be part of a good group of people who have done a lot of good,” Reber said.

St. Rita's now has its own ambulance company, medical equipment and home health services, as well as partnerships in orthopedics, dialysis, cancer services and neurosurgeons it shares with Lima Memorial Health System. Between the medical center and all its ancillary operations, St. Rita's employs about 3,750 people. An increasing number of physicians are forgoing private practice in favor of full-time posts with hospitals, expanding St. Rita's Professional Services stable of physicians from just one doctor when it was launched two years ago to 30 physicians and 11 nurse practitioners in a range of specialties.

Reber became president of the medical center in 1988. He previously served as president and chief executive officer for Franklin Medical Center in Franklin, Pa., and as chief operating officer of Kent General Hospital in Dover, Del.

“I'm turning 65 in March. It's time to turn the reins of leadership over,” Reber said.
