Food company buys Delphos facility

DELPHOS — When Orval Kent and parent company Chef Solutions filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, rival food company Reser's Fine Foods acquired some of their assets.
One of those assets was the Delphos prepared food facility on Gressel Drive.
Reser's Fine Foods paid $69 million for some of the company's assets and properties in November 2011, said Reser's spokesman Dave Lakey on Friday. County records this week showed up with the change in ownership. While the Allen County Auditor's website shows a $5.1 million purchase price, Lakey said that is just an estimate for insurance purposes.
“We purchased a group of assets, one of which was Delphos,” Lakey said. “Because we bought a number of facilities, I don't know what we paid specifically for Delphos. It's a preliminary value we use for insurance.”
Reser's is the leading North American provider of deli salads, fresh salads, side dishes and prepared foods. Founded in 1950 by Earl and Mildred Reser, the company remains privately owned and operated. It provides food for the supermarket and food service industry.
The company is growing quickly. Earlier in 2011, Reser's bought another competitor, Vaughan Foods Inc., which made fresh-cut produce items and refrigerated prepared foods for the food service and retail sectors.
“Typically we keep and grow things we buy,” Lakey said. “We're excited to have Delphos as part of the company. It's Reser's plan to grow the plant. We're eager to grow sales out of Delphos.”
The Delphos facility, formerly owned by I&K, began as a mashed potato and potato salad producer. A few hundred people work there. Employees make refrigerated prepared foods.
