The Ottawa-Glandorf Boys Division III State Basketball champions were honored once again in a ceremony on Thursday, May 2, at the Robert J. Hermiller gymnasium.

Several local dignitaries were present, including Ohio's Fifth Congressional District Representative Bob Latta.

The audience sat with rapt attention as OGHS Government teacher, Brad Leis, began by introducing the student body to the special guests.

Four times in the current seniors’ lifetimes, Ottawa-Glandorf has been to the state basketball tournament. “Commitment is the reason we’re here today,” Leis related, as he asked the students whose parents or grandparents live in the county to stand up; nearly the entire crowd came to its feet. He recognized the students who are involved in athletics, as well as the senior class members who have made post-graduation plans. “This ceremony is to honor a group who has continued that commitment and was on a mission,” he noted.

Glandorf Mayor Gene Warnecke thanked the basketball team for being role models. “You don’t realize what role models you are. You didn’t give up; you hung in there through thick and thin,” he commented.

Ottawa Mayor Dean Meyer told of the fun he and the community had following the Titans this season. He presented head coach, Tyson McGlaughlin, with the Village's resolution declaring the week of April 15 as “Ottawa-Glandorf Boys' Basketball Week.”

Putnam County Commissioner Vince Schroeder turned to the team as he declared, “I know inside each of you is a champion. You bring pride to the whole county.”

Latta took the podium and commented, “I hope this gets to be a habit.” He believed the team and the school brought about great community pride and spirit. “Schools work great when parents are involved,” he asserted. Latta presented the team with a copy of the April 23 congressional record that honored them.

Other dignitaries who attended the ceremony were: Putnam County Sheriff Michael Chandler, Putnam County Commissioner Travis Jerwers, and Putnam County Educational Service Center Superintendent Jan Osborn.
