Ottawa-Glandorf Rotary Club has chosen Kevin Bellman as the recipient of the Putnam County 2013 Community Service Award. They are presenting the award to Bellman today, Wednesday, May 15, during a special program held during the Rotary Club meeting.
“This is a great place and I’ve been blessed to live and work here,” said Bellman. “I just do things to give back to the community.”
Bellman said it was an honor to be nominated, but said he is part of a lot of groups with a lot of good people that are always willing to help.
“They make me look good,” he said. Bellman said after donating money for a good cause or doing his volunteer work, such as a firefighter, it is the end results that bring the most satisfaction.
“It’s always good to know I’ve been able to help in some way,” Bellman said.
Bellman was nominated by Kathy Green, of Pandora, who got to know Bellman through their mutual membership in the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa.
In her nomination, Green said Bellman “exemplifies community service”.
“All of his many, many affiliations have one thing in common, they serve people and improve the community we live in.”
Green said Bellman gives his full attention to projects he is involved with. “He doesn’t just volunteer, he chairs and leads, all for the good of others.”
Kevin and his wife, along with help from family members and friends, host an annual spaghetti dinner as a fundraiser for the “Bellman Believers” Relay For Life Team. They recently held the 11th annual spaghetti dinner which served about 500 people. Their team then donates proceeds to charities such as the American Cancer Society, Putnam County Cancer Assistance Program and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Bellman also volunteers his time with many other organizations. He is a member of the Ottawa Volunteer Fire Department and vice president of the firefighters association. He also serves on the board of Directors for the Putnam County Board of Developmental Disabilities and Putnam County CIC.
He is a member of the allocations committee for the United Way of Putnam County, OG Athletic Boosters, and OAG Jaycees, helping each year with their Rib Fest fundraiser.
He is a member and past president of the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa.
Bellman on the Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce Christmas Committee He was instrumental in the committee which helped bring back the Christmas park lighting project in 2012. Not only did he serve on the committee but he helped gather volunteers from the fire department, helped secure donations from civic groups and helped with the manual labor involved in the project as well
He and his family are members of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church parish where Bellman is an usher, and assists with the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School Reverse Raffle Committee. He is also a past member of the Putnam County Optimist Club.
He is the president of the OG Browns Backers, which raises funds that are donated to Putnam County Job President, OG Browns Backers, which raises funds that are donated to Putnam County Job & Family Services for its Christmas program for families and children in-need. He is also a member of Ottawa Eagles and Sons of the American Legion Post #63.
Bellman is a 1988 graduate of Ottawa-Glandorf High School and a graduate of The Ohio State University where he earned a degree in finance.
Bellman established a strong work ethic early in life when he began washing vehicles at the age of 14 for the family business, the Bellman Ford car dealership. In 1998, Kevin entered the banking arena as an employee of Ohio Bank and the name changes that followed. In August 2010, Kevin became a commercial lender for the First Federal Bank at its Ottawa location.
Kevin and his wife, Missi, are the proud parents of two children, Karlie, age 14, and Zac, age 11.
His hobbies include golf, collecting sports memorabilia and spending time with family.
