Phantasm Designs, in downtown Ottawa, would like you to help celebrate their 35th anniversary, with activities and sales starting March 11. The owners, Don and Holly Huber, created Phantasm Designs back in 1978 in their garage. Business started with printing and designing shirts for local softball teams, businesses, and bands…including artwork for the band McGuffy Lane.
Artwork for each t-shirt design was hand drawn, as in those days computer graphic programs did not exist. One of the first t-shirts he ever made was the "Blizzard of '78" shirt. Since this was before he owned much equipment, the production process for this shirt included cleaning the silk screens in the bathtub, and drying the screened t-shirt in the oven. Holly, not surprisingly, was pleased when he was able to purchase a suitable t-shirt dryer, screen cleaning station, and other suitable equipment needed for production.
In 1980, with business growing, a building was erected beside his home to provide for the growing needs of the business. A chain stich embroidery machine was added in 1983, helping the need to supply coats to groups and businesses, plus varsity coats to schools. Eventually the business outgrew his building and the decision was made to relocate the business to 112 West Main Street in Ottawa, Phantasm’s current location.
This move took place in 1995, and included the purchase of a new embroidery machine, which at the time was one of the only few around. The retail and production area was increased and made it possible to carry merchandise for various local schools and to meet the needs of groups and business. A wide format printer, capable of printing up to 36 inches wide by 50 ft. long was also purchased. This printer increased the services that Phantasm could provide, such as full color signs, posters, photo canvas prints and banners.
As his love for art would prove, in 1998 he began the Buckeye Country Art series. These acrylic paintings illustrated the spirit of Ohio State fans throughout rural Ohio. "Under A Buckeye Moon" was the first painting of this series, and it continues to be one of the most popular of his works. Only 2,000 of these limited edition prints were made and not many remain. The gallery on the second floor at Phantasm houses his beautiful artworks, along with prints and other Buckeye merchandise. They can also be found on the website, www.BuckeyeCountryArt.com.
Today, Phantasm Designs continues to prove why they have been in business for so long. They pride themselves in their dependable customer service, fast turn-around times and original designs. The friendly staff at Phantasm would like to thank everyone for their continued support and celebrate by having “35 weeks of savings”. Starting March 11th, Phantasm will feature discounts on a different item each week. For weekly sale information check their website, www.PhantasmDesigns.com. or stop in the store. There will also be sale announcements available on their Facebook page.
The first week of the anniversary will also feature free cupcakes, a history corner (showcasing some early artworks and photos), and a silent auction. The silent auction will continue for one month and will include printed apparel, artwork and gifts. Profits from the silent auctions will go towards Challenged Champions Equestrian Center.
