VAN WERT
A wrong-way driver went 12 miles on U.S. Route 30 Saturday night before the Ohio Highway Patrol flattened his tires to stop his vehicle.
Kevin Coffee, 44, of Fort Wayne, Ind., drove east in the westbound lanes of U.S. 30, starting in Indiana and crossing into Ohio, according to Lt. R.F. Haas of the Van Wert post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The State Patrol was notified at 5:05 p.m. and caught up with Coffee's 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt near state Route 49, near Convoy.
After several attempts to pull over the vehicle, officers used stop sticks to deflate its tires. They stopped the car safely near U.S. Route 127, Van Wert, the patrol said.
Coffee was transported to Van Wert County Hospital for treatment and observation. There was no record of his condition there Sunday night, an attendant said.
Alcohol was not a factor in the incident, Haas said. There were no crashes.
