Alcohol suspected in crash that injures five

The driver, Skylar Rayl, 21, of Harrod, was driving a 2007 Ford Escape south on Pevee Road shortly after 7 p.m. when he jumped railroad tracks at a crossing.

Because Rayl's vehicle was speeding, Trooper Shawn Bowers said, he went airborne. When he landed, he overcorrected going off the left side of the road striking the ditch, which caused the vehicle to roll over on its top on the road.

During the crash one of the passengers Seth Adams, 20, of Harrod, was ejected through either a side window or the sun roof.

Rayl and Adams were taken to Lima Memorial Health System along with two other passengers, Heather Clayball, 17, of Lima, and Brandon Horn, 26.

Although information on their conditions was not available late Sunday, Bowers said none of the injuries was life-threatening.

He said one of the passengers was admitted to the intensive care unit for an injury to the ribs and difficulty breathing while Adams was headed to surgery late Sunday, with an injury to his shoulder and wrist.

"He could have been killed," Bowers said. "It's very surprising that it isn't a fatality. Knock on wood. They're still in the hospital but they seem to be doing OK.

He said a fifth person in the vehicle, Mason Staley, 20, of Harrod, was treated at the scene and refused to be taken to the hospital.

Rayl and his front-seat passenger, Clayball, both were wearing seat belts while the back-seat passengers, Adams and Horn, were not.
