The American Red Cross of Ottawa County is actively recruiting community members to become Red Cross disaster volunteers. These volunteers will be trained as Disaster Action Team members to respond to fires, floods, tornadoes, and other emergency situations. As the weather turns colder and furnaces are turned on for the season, house fires become more common, and the need for trained volunteers rises.

“Having a trained, prepared, and ready-to-help team is one of the most valuable resources a community can rely on when disaster strikes,” said local Ottawa County director, Beth Leggett. “Sometimes it takes a disaster of great proportion, like Hurricane Sandy, to remind people that volunteers are vital to our mission. The reality is that these volunteers are necessary year round. Unfortunately, home and apartment fires happen nearly every day throughout Northwest Ohio. We rely upon our dedicated volunteers to provide compassionate care and hope to these families.”

The Red Cross is offering the following free classroom training opportunities in November:

· Disaster Services Overview (#02536502) and Disaster Action Team Fundamentals (#02536482) will be offered Monday, November 11, 2013 at 6:00 - 8:30 p.m. in Classroom B at Magruder Hospital in Port Clinton. This is a prerequisite class for all other training.

· Client Casework: Providing Emergency Assistance (#02536514) is a two night training that will be offered Monday, November 18, 2013 from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. and Tuesday, November 19, 2013 from 6:00 - 7:30 PM in Classroom B at Magruder Hospital in Port Clinton.
