MONTEZUMA — A 34-year-old man has been found dead in a western Ohio lake after authorities say he crashed his snowmobile near the shore.

Montezuma fire officials said that Dale Bruns, of St. Henry, went missing after he left Shocker’s Night Club around midnight Saturday.

An extensive search involving nearly 90 personnel from seven agencies ensued.

The Mercer County Sheriff’s Office tried pinging Bruns’ cellphone. The ping, at 2:20 a.m., showed the phone near the gas station on state Route 219 near Windy Point.

At about 10 a.m. Saturday, a team with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources spotted Bruns’ snowmobile helmet floating in the open waters of Grand Lake, about 30 miles southwest of Lima.

His body was found soon after.

“This is a tragic accident and there is no indication of it being anything but an accident,” said Montezuma Fire Chief Ron Schulze. “The Sheriff’s Office is compling an investigation.

Last month, a 44-year-old Gary Jenkins of Norwalk in northern Ohio was killed when the snowmobile he was riding south of Sandusky hit a culvert and threw him.
