LIMA — The day after Thanksgiving, retailers opened the doors early. Now, with less than a week before Christmas, they are keeping them open — in some cases, around the clock.
Starting at 6 a.m. today, Kohl’s will be open 24 hours a day until it closes at 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve. That marathon will mean more than 100 straight hours of shopping. Toys R Us will also have 24-hour shopping in stores beginning at 6 a.m. Saturday through 9 p.m. Christmas Eve.
Kmart will be open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Christmas Eve, expanded from normal shopping days and more hours than the store was open last year Christmas Eve.
Many Macy’s department stores across the country will be open 24 hours a day, and some, including the Lima Mall store, will have extended hours. Starting today, the local Macy’s will be open from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. On Christmas Eve, the store will be open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Macy’s had made 24-hour and extended hour shopping a tradition since 2006.
“Overnight shopping at Macy’s has become a holiday tradition that last minute gift-givers count on to get them through the time crunch of the season,” said Peter Sachse, chief stores officer, Macy’s Inc.
Retailers say the early, late and overnight hour options give shoppers smaller crowds, shorter lines and time to shop when they have it.
“We are offering customers extended, uninterrupted time in stores, providing them the opportunity to shop whenever is most convenient for them — whether early in the morning or late at night,” said Troy Rice, executive vice president, stores and services, Toys R Us Inc.
The Times Square Toys R Us kicked off the 24-hour shopping early; it opened its doors at 8 a.m. Dec. 1 and will keep them open until 10 p.m. Christmas Eve, 566 straight hours.
Also, for those last-minute shoppers, Toys R Us guarantees that orders placed by noon Monday with express shipping will arrive by Christmas Eve.
